Chapter 26

“You didn’t have to stand over me. I’m perfectly fucking capable of dressing myself.”

Rowan growled. Shifting his shoulders uncomfortably in his black shirt and jacket. Like a snake trying to shed its skin. Their polished boots hit the cool flagstones of the narrow landing outside Niall’s rooms. The heavy wooden door just up ahead was an unfamiliar sight. He couldn’t remember the last time he hadn’t portaled directly into the comfort of his lounge.

Rowan continued to adjust himself. Yanking at the high collar of his formal jacket like it had personally affronted him.

He smirked at his brother’s imposing back. As suspected Rowan hadn’t been dressed when he arrived to collect him. Instead the brute had been half naked, smeared from head to toe with suspiciously bloody looking streaks of mud, and sharpening his blades.

He’d always known his brother was unhinged. No amount of magic could fix that.

Fortunately he’d made quick work of readying both his brother and himself into ball-appropriate attire, ignoring Rowan’s bitter complaints the entire time. Then endured his attempts to strap blades to every spare inch of his body.

By the time they’d portaled back to Castle Nitorna, Rowan bristled with weapons like some kind of metallic porcupine.

“Since when do we stand around in the fucking hallway?” Rowan reached a tattooed hand to push open the door.

“Since we’re hosting the Queen of the fae, you dick.” Niall batted his hand away with a pointed glare. “Wait here. She doesn’t need you terrifying her while she finishes getting ready.”

Rowan went back to hitching his massive shoulders inside his shirt. While yes, on one hand he wanted to give Ruby a sense of privacy—she didn’t need two witches portaling straight into the room unannounced—on the other, he was already on edge. Merely the thought of Ruby presented as if on display tonight sent something dark ablaze inside him. The possessive part of him wanted to check on her without his ogre of a brother in tow.

Niall slipped through the door with one last dagger-like glare at Rowan to ensure he stayed outside.

The fireplace crackled with a soft and inviting hum, but the room sat empty. He took a second to straighten his cuffs with a quick jerk and run his hand to smooth his hair, then made his way towards the bedroom in search of her.

The door stood open, but he was entirely unprepared for the sight that met him as he pressed inside.

If he’d ever thought there’d be a moment when his entire world tilted on its axis. Irrevocably changed forever. This was that moment.

And he couldn’t do anything but stare in open mouthed awe. Like a lovestruck fool.

Ruby turned to greet him with a tiny smile, a vision of elegance and beauty that could make the Goddesses themselves weep. Her curves wrapped in a strapless gown of turquoise silk shimmering with iridescence where the material cinched and moulded to her form. Like liquid moonlight set against her tanned skin. All her beautiful ink on full display for all to see, not hidden away under pastel gowns and demure Queenly attire.
